I came across this web site that is about one city’s effort to raise funds for a new playground. They even have a website about it. So far they’ve raised $205,000 and need to get to $355000 (see http://www.freedomplay.org)

The community wants to build a custom playground at the new Park and Community Center at Haverford Reserve located between Darby and Marple Roads in Haverford Township. That’s in Pennsylvania.

They are involving everyone in the project. Their Build Week is from April 20-25, 2010 starting at 8am until 9pm each day. They will provide volunteers with lunch and dinner as well as free childcare for 9 years and younger. Part of the fundraising is to purchase a hand print on a tile for $15 which will be mounted above the picket fence posts lining the playground.

This is an amazing effort.

“Freedom Playground will be built with Universal Design. Adults and children alike will be able to use the playground regardless of their abilities. ALL children will have the opportunity to go down a slide or play tag on the accessible ground cover. Freedom Playground will provide a play place for children with varied disabilities, including physical, mental and sensory issues. Similar playgrounds have been built in other communities and have made huge impacts on the lives of many families.”

Freedom Playground will be designed and guided by Leather and Associates based in Ithaca, NY. Leathers is the premier custom-built playground architectural firm in the US and has built over 2,000 playgrounds. The projected cost of the Freedom Playground is $355,000. The only paid labor will be for architectural fees and installing the ground cover.”

Good luck – we can’t wait to see pictures!
