The NRPA Show

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

In a world where children are saddled with homework and computers, the NRPA plays an important role in maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for children to play in. The NRPA, otherwise known as the National Recreation and Park Association, has made it its mission to advance parks, recreation, and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people. They work to pass needed bills and reforms in Congress, publish a popular magazine, and take care of many other aspects to further their cause. A highlight of the year is the annual NRPA Congress and Exposition.

This year’s show was held in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 1 -3. The show boasts exhibitions from the biggest names in the eco-friendly and parks industries, as well as seminars and a chance to exchange ideas with experts from around the country. Rubberecycle was in attendance at this year’s show, educating Parks officials and Eco-conservers about the benefits of rubber mulch for children and the environment.

The NRPA Congress and Exposition was the source of many interesting and instructive topics. Among the many topics discussed were a certified playground safety inspector course, aquatic facility operator course, and many other educational sessions. A Fun Run and Walk 5k through Atlanta’s premiere community park also took place on the last day of the convention. Rubber mulch is always a source of much hype at the shows, where experts expound on its many benefits in preventing playground injuries in children, and the fact that it is extremely environmentally responsible, being made from recycled tires.

Rubberecycle always makes sure to be a presence at shows such as those sponsored by the NRPA because they are more than just commercial trade shows; they have the best interests of communities at heart. By spreading the word of Playsafer mulch, more communities can offer their children truly safe and clean places to play.

An Overview of Global Warming

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

The Green Revolution has become a trend, a hip, in thing to do. The fact of the matter is that many people who are going green don’t even know why they’re doing it, and what climate change has to do with using a different brand of soap. For any true environmentalist, it’s important to understand the background behind the Green Revolution.

Over the last twenty years scientists have discovered increased temperatures around the world. They have come up with a well-supported theory to back this phenomenon. Above the earth there floats an ozone layer, a layer that protects the planet from harmful UV rays released by the sun. In the 1980s scientists gathered data showing depletion of the ozone layer, and this would allow more UV rays to reach the earth. Scientists have also found that greenhouse gases (otherwise known as pollution and other unclean gases) emitted by humans is compounding the problem, as the gases are trapped by the ozone layer, further causing a rise in temperature. This effect has come to be known as global warming.

We’ve seen the effect of global warming during the last few years, with an alarming amount of natural disasters and freak weather storms, ranging from tsunamis to hurricanes. Scientists fear that if left unchecked, global warming could melt the polar ice caps and bring untold damage onto planet earth. This is where going green comes in. The philosophy behind the Green Revolution is that every little bit of pollution that is prevented, and eco-friendly products used will help prevent global warming.

Although scientists agree upon the global warming theory internationally, not everyone is convinced. Many people still go about their daily lives blissfully unaware, or choosing not to believe the destruction that is being wrought. Many manufacturers, however, are working to make the world a greener place with eco-friendly products. Enter rubber mulch.

Rubber mulch is, in essence, recycled tires that are ground into chips and cleansed from metal bits and toxins. The mulch is extremely useful for landscaping, horse arena flooring, and playground flooring. Aside for the fact that it is environmentally friendly, rubber tire mulch also has many benefits that are making consumers into fans, even if they aren’t green-conscious people.

Every item that is recycled can help planet earth clean up and prevent global warming. By using rubber mulch, consumers will enjoy its many benefits, and rest at ease with the knowledge that they are helping to prevent catastrophic global warming.

Rubber Yoga Mats

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

While rubber mulch is one of the most popular products that are made from recycled rubber, is there are many products on the market today that are also made responsibly. Yoga mats, for example, are big sellers, with yoga and pilates classes being all the rage. As being natural and practicing yoga becomes more in style, going green follows suit. Therefore, many of those who buy yoga mats also look for mats that are eco-friendly.

Many manufacturers who advertise eco-friendly yoga mats are sadly misleading consumers, because the mats of made from rubber trees, but cutting down rubber trees doesn’t really make for good practices. Rubber mulch, on the other hand, is made by shredding old tires. This is authentic recycling at its best. There are some yoga mats that are in truth friendly to the environment but consumers must be wary of advertisements.

Aside for the environmental factor, consumers should also check that the yoga mats are non-skid, both against the floor and with sweat as a factor. The mat should be large enough to allow all yoga positions comfortably. It is also a good idea to look for a yoga mat that is light in weight, as each week it will be carried to and from class. Some yoga mats come with straps to wrap around the mat after it is rolled up. This is a useful feature for someone who will be walking to and from classes.

Yoga mats vary greatly in prices, based on different factors. If the mat encompasses the above criteria, it should be good; there is no need to spend a lot on a yoga mat. Just make sure that like Rubberecycle rubber mulch flooring, the yoga mat is truly made in a way that is friendly to the environment, from recycled rubber.

A Recycled World

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

The newest in a long line of laws and litigation hoping to make the planet more eco-friendly is a ban on plastic bags in select counties. As global warming brings natural disasters at an alarming rate, more and more everyday citizens are looking for ways to go green. There are already hundreds, if not thousands, or household goods that are made out of recycled products.

Rubber mulch is made of recycled tires, and is a way to go green that many people may not know about. Rubber mulch is manufactured by shredding used tires, for use as playground flooring, landscaping materials, and flooring in horse arenas. Aside for the green aspect, reviewers of rubber mulch products are finding many benefits, including its added absorbency, making it safer for kids to play in playgrounds that have rubber mulch flooring. Rubber chips are also replacing other forms of mulch because it allows more rainwater to filter to the plants, and requires little maintenance.

More and more gifts are made out of recycled products, for creative gift ideas that help the environment. These may include random objects such as bottle openers made from the wood of old baseball bats, wine bottles that are melted down and made into platters, and more. Gift givers can easily make their own meaningful gifts out of objects that can be found around the house.

Even apparel can be found from recycled materials! There are recycled glass earrings, handbags and cases made from magazines, and assorted apparel items and accessories that are made out of everyday household goods.

It can be easy to help the environment, simply by purchasing products that are made from recycled objects. The options are endless, and can range from what you wear, to what you eat on or sleep on.

Mulch and the Military

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

When most people think of rubber mulch, they associate it with safe playground flooring and landscaping. A big part of what rubber mulch is also used for is military training. It makes rubber mulch a winning solution for everyone – the environment, the economy, and American troops.

American soldiers train in less than optimal conditions, in an effort to prepare them for whatever combat may throw their way. However, it is important to ensure that they are safe while they train. Rubber mulch flooring by Rubberecycle is the flooring of choice for anything from shooting ranges to obstacle courses and scrimmage grounds. The rubber flooring provides a good grip so soldiers don’t slip, and the added absorbency prevents injury from falls and the shock from bullets. The mulch comes in all colors, so military personnel can train in challenging situations, where the target blends in with the background.

Rubber flooring has an advantage over grass and wood chips for human protection, because it doesn’t get as slippery in the rain, providing better traction for combat boots. Nor does it throw up clouds of dust in hot conditions. It is the best of both worlds.

Another benefit of rubber mulch is that tax dollars are not wasted on constant maintenance and replenishing. The mulch does not erode, get discolored, or blow away in wind and rain; it lasts for years. When the military purchases rubber flooring they are helping support Americans, as the mulch is manufactured here in the United States, and provides business to fellow Americans, rather than imported goods that are so common in today’s society.

The use of Playsafer mulch also helps the environment by keeping tires out of landfills, and recycling them for constructive purposes. There is nothing more patriotic than helping to keep American soil clean, saving space in landfills, and helping to boost the economy by purchasing American made products. When all this is going to help train military personnel, there is no greater pride. Rubber mulch is helping the banner of Democratic freedom fly.

Rubber Mulch and Other Flooring Options for Horse Arenas

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Horse racing and training is more than an occupation. It’s an art. Any horse owner or trainer knows that horses are expensive, as is their upkeep. Being negligent or not investing in the best for your horse is a bad decision, when your horse’s safety and well being is at stake. That’s why you can only get the best flooring for a horse arena. The best is rubber mulch.

When building an arena, it’s important to get the horse footing right, because if the ground is too deep the horse can strain a tendon, and not deep enough won’t provide cushioning for the horse to do really hard work. There are different options for flooring in a horse arena, some of which are sand, sand with additives, and rubber mulch. Rubber mulch mixed with sand is the most attractive option for many horse owners for a variety of reasons.

Rubber tracks for racing are known to give an extra spring, and give the best running time. They also have an advantage over sand that there is minimal dust kicked up. The best known way to control dust is with sprinklers and water. Using rubber mulch saves much time and effort spent on controlling dust that is kicked up from sand.

Some horse owners with outdoor arenas have found that black mulch flooring gets hot in the middle of the day in the summer, and horses can’t be rode on it. However, this isn’t a problem for those that don’t ride in the heat of the day regardless. Also, today’s rubber mulch is manufactured in various colors that don’t absorb the sun and get as hot as black. Another solution is to mix the mulch with sand, which will reduce the heat.

The last factor which some horse owners may balk at is the expense of rubber mulch. However, most quickly realize that the mulch pays for itself within a few years, as it requires little or no maintenance and replenishing, as opposed to other flooring options for horse arenas. As time passes, more and more horse owners are realizing that the smart solution for flooring in a horse arena is rubber mulch.

Rubber Mulch-Benefits and Importance

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Rubber mulch is installed on hard surfaces such as playgrounds, gardens and backyards so as to make a rubber covering on them. This rubber mulch is prepared from used tires and is eco friendly in nature. It is really a very useful product as it reduces the possibility of accidents that are taking place on playground surfaces. We all know that mulch made of rubber tires is great for our environment. Recycling and Reusing of these tires and manufacturing rubber mulch from them is really a great idea.

Rubber mulch can be used for multiple purposes. You can also use it as an alternative to wood mulch. It is really a great technique that reuses waste material to prepare a very useful product. The best thing about rubber mulch is that it is durable, long lasting and can be used for many years.

It does get ruined from bad weathers or heavy rain or snow. Rubber mulch is neither blown away by stormy winds nor is it washed away by heavy rains.

Seeing the increasing demand and excessive use, some people have started preparing and doing it themselves it is easy and might be fun . It just requires some easy steps along with a few tools. There are various benefits of rubber mulch. Some of them are as follows.
• Rubber mulch acts as a protective covering on hard surfaces.
• Rubber mulch makes the surface soft and just perfect for kids to play on it.
• It does not attract insects.
• It is easy to clean and easy to maintain.
• Rubber mulch is durable and affordable too.

Recycling Political Signs

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

If you’re like me it’s troubling that there are a lot of political signs on lawns that seem like a big waste. Especially now that the elections are over. I’ve thought about ways that the signs could be reused. Maybe cities can collect signs, paint them over and store them. Politicians could rent them out.

In some cities in Oregon, you can recycle most plastic political yard signs by taking them apart. You can recycle the plastic part that is the rigid, corrugated plastic.

The other type of political sign is made of a thin plastic film. According to an article about the topic you can recycle these type of signs with recyclable grocery bags. You can find recycling dropoffs at some grocery or other stores (I think I’ve seen them at Costco).

Recycling signs can make a difference. “While its true plastic can biodegrade, most plastic items take between 500 and 1000 years to decompose, taking up space for several generations. According to Roseburg Disposal, recycling one ton of plastic saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space.”

We’re fans of reusing materials whenever possible. Like Plastic Barrels Recycled Into Playground Swings, Recycled Rubber Sinks, or recycled tires that get turned into rubber for curbs or playground surfaces.

Hotel Chain Recycles Soap – Sends to 3rd World Countries

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

This is a simple recycling idea that I hope to see at more hotels. The New York Palace Hotel is a luxury hotel with fancy soap for each guest. But if you’ve been at hotels very often you’re aware of how much soap gets thrown away or stays in a closet somewhere. Now the hotel is doing something with that soap – it’s recycling.

The New York Palace has partnered with and Clean the World to implement the program. It will help people in third world countries where the soap will be sent. The soap will be sanitized and then given to homeless shelters and impoverished people around the world.

Clean the World estimates that the hotel will provide over 25,000 bars of soap monthly to underprivileged people in desperate need of soap, while simultaneously diverting 28 tons of landfill waste and recycling over four tons of plastic each year.

You can get involved. Donate soap and shampoo to: http://www.cleantheworld.org/contribute.asp or find out about becoming a Recycling Partner: http://www.cleantheworld.org/partners.asp

Think of the impact we could have on the world through this simple act – not only abroad but in our own country.

Does your College Hold a Green Graduation?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

It’s about that time of year for graduation and some students and schools are going green for the special event. Some colleges use recycled paper but still others take it another step further to recycling graduation gowns.

Students are recycling their graduation gowns and even their graduation hats. New products are easier on the earth. They’re not made from polyester that is made from petroleum. Some are even made from recycled plastic.

Still, about 100 schools out of 1,500 ordered the green option. Some even get the gowns washed (with biodegradeable detergent of course) and use them for another graduate.

The company Jostens offers biodegradable gowns in 6 colors. Gowns made of plastic bottles are available only in black for now. The price? Just a few dollars more than the traditional gown.

Go to the University of Vermont bookstore, and you’ll see a gown on display that shows 23 plastic bottles. That’s how many it takes to make it.
