Rubber mulch is known to be excellent for playground flooring, landscaping, and as flooring in horse arenas. What many people don’t know is that rubber is also widely used in shooting ranges, both for flooring and as a backstop.
In a shooting range it is very important to have the place built from the right materials because a mistake could be dangerous. Rubber mulch chips are great for ballistic range backstops in rifle and pistol ranges. This is because the rubber encapsulates the bullet and prevents ricocheting. It also lessens the amount of dangerous atmospheric lead dust that rises from the back wall when a bullet is shot, and it provides good acoustics, absorbing the sound somewhat. Unlike other materials such as wood, recycled rubber mulch as a backstop will never rot, and it discourages insect and rodent infestation.
Many indoor ranges make use of rubber mulch in their flooring, too, with about two feet of ground rubber. Many ranges also mimic the flooring that is used in horse arenas, with a clay or packed earth base that is layered with sand, mixed with mulch. Many arenas also have sprinkler systems that hose down the floor before the ride to minimize the amount of dust that is kicked up. Doing the same in a shooting range will prevent the risk of fire. It is important to note, however, that rubber flooring should not be used in a shooting range where incendiary rounds are shot.
In an outdoor pit where there is gravel flooring, it is very important to layer another material on top of the gravel, because gravel will cause bullets to ricochet. It is recommended to use sand, rubber, or a mixture of the two.
Recycled rubber has many uses on the shooting range, and will keep the area safe and soundproof.

The newest in a long line of laws and litigation hoping to make the planet more eco-friendly is a ban on plastic bags in select counties. As global warming brings natural disasters at an alarming rate, more and more everyday citizens are looking for ways to go green. There are already hundreds, if not thousands, or household goods that are made out of recycled products.
Rubber mulch is made of recycled tires, and is a way to go green that many people may not know about. Rubber mulch is manufactured by shredding used tires, for use as playground flooring, landscaping materials, and flooring in horse arenas. Aside for the green aspect, reviewers of rubber mulch products are finding many benefits, including its added absorbency, making it safer for kids to play in playgrounds that have rubber mulch flooring. Rubber chips are also replacing other forms of mulch because it allows more rainwater to filter to the plants, and requires little maintenance.
More and more gifts are made out of recycled products, for creative gift ideas that help the environment. These may include random objects such as bottle openers made from the wood of old baseball bats, wine bottles that are melted down and made into platters, and more. Gift givers can easily make their own meaningful gifts out of objects that can be found around the house.
Even apparel can be found from recycled materials! There are recycled glass earrings, handbags and cases made from magazines, and assorted apparel items and accessories that are made out of everyday household goods.
It can be easy to help the environment, simply by purchasing products that are made from recycled objects. The options are endless, and can range from what you wear, to what you eat on or sleep on.

Here are some commonly asked questions about using rubber mulch in landscaping. The best part of using rubber mulch is it’s clean, not dirty like bark or soil. Some have tried to discredit rubber mulch as a good choice to use in your yard.

I’m typing this as I look out the window to falling snow. I’m not ready yet! Luckily, it’s not too late to get my garden ready for Winter. The ground is not frozen yet. Here’s what you should do:
You should plant (if you haven’t already) bulbs for Spring. If you want beautiful tulips then now is the time to act. As long as the ground is not frozen you can plant bulbs.
Here’s something you can do AFTER the ground is frozen (courtesy of the Farmer’s Almanac): apply protective [including rubber] mulches on the perennial garden after the ground has frozen an inch or two.
Cover strawberry plants two inches deep with hay or straw.
Cover your garden furniture.
Work a trowelful of bonemeal into the soil around your rosebush, then hill up more soil around the base.
Prune your grapevines.
Turn your compost pile.
Water all trees and shrubs before the ground freezes.
Check the trees around your house for weak branches and remove them now rather than by snow and ice later.

Larry A. Sagers is a Horticulture Specialist with Utah State University and is host of the KSL Greenhouse Show. I listen to his program many Saturday mornings at http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=209
Here are some landscaping tips:
1. When you plant, aim to create a 3-dimensional effect. One of the biggest mistakes people make is putting all of the plants up against the house or fence. Spread them out.
2. Many people buy plants that are too big for their yard and then have a hard time managing them. It’s better to allow space for the plants to grow to their natural size and shape and then prune them.
3. Select plant materials with a mature height of one half the height of the eves of the home. They will frame your home and are much easier to maintain because they won’t need extensive pruning.
4. Place lower plants next to your door to draw the eye to the focal point and create a warm, eye-appealing look.
5. Avoid planting large trees next to your home. The classic mistake a lot of homeowners make is putting tiny, one-gallon size blue spruces planted next to the home. They will outgrow your yard and need to be removed.
6. Additionally, consider recycled rubber landscape mulch. Rubber mulch can be an attractive, long wearing mulch for plants and trees.

It’s Fall and that means taking care of your yard and landscaping. What are the biggest problems when it comes to Fall tree planting? Planting and mulch. “The No. 1 killer of trees I get calls on is improper planting or mulching,” says Chuck Conner, an urban forester with the Missouri Department of Conservation.
Rubber mulch is part of an attractive and easily maintained yard, including trees. It keeps the moisture in without absorbing any water. So there isn’t rot or other issues you can get when you use wood mulch products. It’s also a recycled product.
Fall is an excellent time to plant a tree. One expert in Kansas City decided to catalog the best trees for the state. He asked “local tree experts to rate oaks, maples, elms and hundreds of other trees for their landscape value, longevity, success as street trees, disease-resistance and adaptability to the stress of Kansas City’s challenging climate and clay soils.”
They ranked the trees on a scale from 0-5. Many times it comes down to personal preference sometimes. Communities need a diversity of tree types that fit the local climate. They should be aesthetically pleasing and having diversity prevents disease from spreading.
Trees improve the quality of our lives. Here’s my favorite quote about how we need living things (from the article): “We’re not made to live with just concrete and grass.”
You do have to maintain your trees and it takes some work to know which tree to plant. Here is some advice in picking out a tree: Walk around your neighborhood looking at trees, consult online and published authorities, and consider possibilities beyond the trees you already know. Take the time to choose a spot wisely, and plant with care.
Good advice for any state.

It’s almost time for summer and with that comes yard work and landscaping. Some will choose to line flower beds and islands in their yard with traditional wood mulch. But there’s an alternative that homeowners may overlook – rubber mulch for landscaping.
According to some, wood mulch is not the best choice for landscaping. Why? Because wood mulch can be part of an insect problem — a common issue that no homeowner welcomes.
Wood mulch can harbor bugs, snails, snakes, earwigs and ants. Some of those pests make their way into the home. Another issue is what happens when wood gets wet or when it’s exposed to direct sun, as most surfaces are. It can decompose and so it doesn’t look good. With the decomposing you can also get a bad smell.
Rubber mulch is an innovative alternative to traditional wood mulch. It’s made from recycled rubber tires and doesn’t decompose because of water or sunlight. You also don’t have to keep bringing in new loads, once the wood breaks down and no longer looks good.

A new landscaping business was interviewed about the latest trends in their business. Does your city have a large selection of landscaping products including rubber mulch?
What’s the newest trends when it comes to homeowners landscaping their properties?
The company replied: “One o f the newest trends in landscaping is using rubber mulch, in lieu of natural mulches. This product is made from recycled, non-tire rubber, making this 100% wire free. It is non-toxic, and is children, pet and plant safe. It comes in a variety of colours, which lasts for years, so there is no need to re-apply mulch year after year. This product is also very popular as a playground surface, to help keep children safe from falls and it is much cleaner than the alternatives.”
There you have it! We know we’re biased but we are happy to see that our Canadian neighbors are catching on to rubber mulch and its benefits. Our rubber mulch calculator tells you how much you would need for the area and depth of your space. We also have a list of rubber mulch landscaping FAQs.
In the article below it talks about using rubber mulch in landscaping. The only possible problem is it can change the acidity of the soil – which I’m sure pretty much any ground covering could do.
