Rubber Mulch Installed at Mississippi Playground

There’s a new park in Starkville, Mississippi and the surface is not wood chips, it’s rubber mulch. The new playground is located at the Starkville Sportsplex. The effort was a joint one between the city, the parks commission, and others in the community.  They used donations and grant money to fund the project. After doing the research the group decided that they wanted a rubber surface rather than the traditional playground cover.

Here’s a quote from one of the park planners: “Once those involved started getting specifications on the playground, we realized it was going to be more expensive if we wanted to use the rubber surface instead of mulch,” she said. However, they went ahead because in their words, “it’s better for accessibility.” In other words, children in wheelchairs could access the park. Plus there would be no wood chips in anyone’s shoes.

The community rallied to make the project happen. We applaud Starkville for their goal to have a healthier community. Now there’s something for kids of all ages to do. The only thing I’d ask for is a picture!
