There Should Be a Law

Parent’s Magazine says it bluntly: America’s playgrounds put our kids at risk.  Sure, there have been many advances in playground safety.  Tens of thousands of playgrounds across the country are proud to boast the highest measures of safety protection, most notably that of safety surfacing.  Despite all that, there are also goodness-knows-how-many playgrounds that don’t meet safety standards.

According to Rachel Weintraub, assistant general counsel at the Consumer Federation of America (CFA), “Many… deaths and injuries are preventable.  We need mandatory federal standards.”

One of the most significant dangers to children is the lack of sufficient safety surfacing to cushion falls.  The good news is that many playgrounds have switched to rubber mulch, the safest safety surfacing option available.  The bad news is that if that super-safe surfacing is not contained, hundreds of pairs of feet will redistribute it so that it is no longer the proper depth in all of the correct areas.

But there’s good news in response to that bad news, as well.  Rubberecycle’s Rubber Curbs are perfectly designed to enclose play areas, keeping rubber mulch in and keeping debris and dirt out.  In a nutshell, Rubber Curbs are long, smooth rubber barriers that are driven into the ground with long metal stakes. The major advantage of Rubber Curbs is that they ensure that playground mulch stays exactly where it is supposed to—ensuring the safety of the kids, as well.

There ought to be a law mandating federal standards for playground safety. But even before that happens, every playground owner with a conscience owes it to the public to make sure that their playground mulch stays put—with Rubber Curbs.
